Pineapple Lily, a Flower Resembling a Pineapple

Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia Plant Encyclopedia

Today, I'd like to introduce the Pineapple Lily. It's also known as Eucomis undulata. The scientific name of this plant is Eucomis autumnalis (Mill.) Chitt, and it is said that the Greek word 'eukomos' originates from 'eu,' meaning 'pleasure,' and 'kome,' meaning 'hair.

This plant is called Pineapple Lily because its flower resembles a pineapple and it's a bulbous plant. While it's called a pineapple lily and its bulb is used, it's neither a pineapple nor an actual lily. It's said to be closely related to asparagus.

Native to Africa, the Pineapple Lily has about 10 to 14 species. It grows to about 50 cm in height and has a large, membrane-covered bulb underground. In mid-July, a flower stalk about 60 cm long and thick emerges, with numerous small, pale greenish-white or cream flowers densely arranged in a spike at the top. It's cultivated for cut flowers and garden beds.

The flower language of this plant is "Perfection." I wonder how it came to have this flower language.

Known as Eucomis, this flower has a unique look, with small leaves growing at the tip of the thick stalk where the flower spike emerges, resembling a rice panicle. The flower color varies depending on the variety, including green, pink, white, and burgundy. It's not a commonly used flower for flower arrangements, but its unique appearance makes it suitable for flower arrangements where the stem is kept upright. When used in flower arrangements, it's often combined with foliage plants or colorful flowers in low vases to create a tropical feel.
