Hello everyone. Are you familiar with the Angel's Trumpet? It looks similar to a regular trumpet vine, but it has a unique characteristic of blooming facing downwards towards the ground instead of upwards towards the sky.
Its scientific name is Brugmansia arborea, and it's commonly known as Brugmansia or Angel's trumpets in English. The flower's meaning is said to be “Ephemeral Love”.
It's a flowering plant that produces large, showy trumpet-shaped flowers. It thrives in sunlight and is resistant to cold and drought, but it's important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic and should be handled with caution.
Originating from Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Colombia, it's said that it emits a fragrance in the evening to deter pests. Interestingly, this pleasant scent disappears as the sun rises.
Despite its fragrant beauty, it's known to be harmful to humans due to its strong toxicity. When handling it, it's recommended to wear gloves.
It thrives in warm environments with an average temperature of 16-25℃ and requires a sunny location. It's best to provide regular sunlight and water it about once a week. When growing it, be mindful of pests.
So, why does the Angel's Trumpet flower bloom facing downwards?
The reason is simpler than you might think. Due to its heavy weight, the flower droops as it blooms. This drooping appearance gives it an impression of humility and obedience, hence the name. Its shape also resembles something an angel might hold, further adding to its graceful image.
Oh, and I'd like to share a fun fact with you. If there's an Angel's Trumpet, what other flower do you think might exist? The answer is the Devil's Trumpet. In Korea, it's commonly known as the White Datura (흰독말풀). The meaning of the Devil's Trumpet flower is said to be “Dream, Intoxication, To Intoxicate You”. The difference between the two is the direction in which the flowers bloom. While the Angel's Trumpet points downwards, the Devil's Trumpet proudly faces upwards.
